Improving classroom learning conditions through functional furniture for students in Benin City.

Background and Problem Statement

A needs assessment conducted by ALP at Aduwawa Secondary School informed the implementation of the “Guard Our School: Say No to Theft & Vandalism” sensitization campaign. During the campaign, ALP engaged with students, teachers, school management, and community members on the state of school facilities.

These engagements revealed concerns regarding the condition and availability of classroom desks and chairs, many of which were no longer functional. This situation affected classroom organization and student comfort, underscoring the need for practical interventions to support effective teaching and learning.

Project Objectives

The objectives of this intervention were to:

  • Improve classroom learning conditions through the provision of functional tables and chairs.
  • Enhance student comfort and concentration during lessons.
  • Support effective teaching by improving classroom organization and seating arrangements.
  • Contribute to a more conducive and supportive learning environment for students and teachers.

Description of the Intervention

On 11 December 2025, African Literacy Project donated 30 tables and chairs to Aduwawa Secondary School. The items were delivered to the school premises and formally received by the school management headed by the principal, Comr. (Mrs) Violet Ojemolon.

In consultation with the school, the tables and chairs were assigned to the SS1A class as part of efforts to improve classroom learning conditions.

Students expressed visible excitement and appreciation upon the arrival and arrangement of the furniture in their classroom. Teachers and school management also welcomed the intervention, noting its relevance to improving classroom organization and learning conditions.

Beneficiary Feedback

Short interviews were conducted with selected students, teachers, and school administrators. During these engagements, beneficiaries highlighted the usefulness of the furniture in enhancing student comfort, classroom order, and learning focus.

School leadership expressed appreciation for ALP’s support and continued commitment to addressing practical school needs.

Outcomes

  • 30 functional desks and chairs added to the classroom, increasing available seating for students.

About School

Aduwawa Secondary School is a mixed public secondary school located in Aduwawa community, Benin City, Edo State. Established in 1981, the school has continued to serve the educational needs of families within the community and its surrounding areas.

The senior secondary section offers academic pathways in Science, Social Science, and Arts. The school currently has a total student population of 486 students, comprising 204 males and 282 females, supported by a team of 21 teachers.

Facilities include six functional classrooms serving the senior secondary section and an open field used for sports and recreational activities.

In 2013, the school won the Adams Oshiomhole Award for academic excellence. In 2025, the school emerged as first runner-up in a mathematics competition organized by the Mathematics Association of Nigeria and won the Governor’s Cup in football.

Conclusion

The donation of tables and chairs successfully addressed a key infrastructure gap at Aduwawa Secondary School. The positive feedback from students, teachers, and school management underscores the relevance and impact of practical, school-centered interventions.
