At African Literacy Project (ALP), we recognize that education extends beyond academic instruction. Co-curricular activities are essential in creating engaging learning environments and supporting the holistic development of students.
During our engagement with Edokpolor Grammar School, Benin City, school management identified the lack of a functional drum set as a challenge affecting the coordination and effectiveness of school assemblies. The absence of appropriate musical instruments also limited opportunities for students to participate in structured co-curricular activities such as a school band, which could foster creativity, teamwork, and talent development.
The intervention was designed to:
Improve the coordination and effectiveness of school assemblies.
Increase student participation and engagement in school activities.
Support the development of a school band.
Provide students with opportunities to develop creativity, teamwork, discipline, and confidence.
Create a platform for talent discovery and personal development through co-curricular activities.
Enhance the overall learning environment by supporting activities beyond the classroom.
To address the identified need, ALP donated a drum set to Edokpolor Grammar School. The drum set consisted of:
One bass drum
One snare drum
Two tom drums
The equipment was formally presented to the school by representatives of ALP. The donation was intended to strengthen the school’s co-curricular activities and improve the organization of school assemblies.
A key highlight of the intervention was the immediate use of the drum set during a school assembly. Selected students performed with the instruments, bringing greater energy, coordination, and engagement to the assembly while demonstrating the potential impact of the donation.
